A little while ago I got to spend a bit of time at the gun range – my girlfriend suggested it as a valentines day activity. I thought it was great, and really enjoyed it.
I learned a few things. First, I’m not hopeless with a handgun – and give me a competition quality forty five and I’m actually kind of good. My girlfriend is a better shot with a nine millimeter than I am. Also, I have the coolest girlfriend on the planet.
It also taught me some stuff about using guns. Proper stance, rate of fire, mechanics of an automatic, etc.
Normally I write pulp – horror, science fiction (with a heavy focus on post-apocalyptic science fiction), fantasy, etc. My current WIP is pure literature (not saying great literature, but definitely literary fiction, not genre at all). There are no guns in it, or anything of the sort. It’s a huge departure for me.
Having said that, the shooting actually inspired a scene in a crime novel I’m working on. I just have to finish my current piece before I can write that one.
