Hard work vs. creativity

There seems to be an automatic assumption that those that have succeeded as writers are somehow brilliant people, that inspiration just comes naturally to them. Of course, that’s just garbage. Try reading Stephen King’s On Writing and you will see decades of practice, decades of training.

Hard work is the medium that allows for creativity. You need to put in the work to build the creative muscles. Write a lot, write every day. You will get better over time, you have no choice. Do the work, gain the skill.

So, I have been working my ass off for a few years, but not that many years. For a very long time, I didn’t work my ass off, I wrote occasionally, but I didn’t put in the work. So, I’m a relative neophyte. My journey is fairly new, and so my writing reflects that. It is getting better, over time.
