Rethinking Covers

Mountains and a Beach

So far I’ve done all of my own cover art. That’s cool and all, but I think it’s also career limiting. I’m not an illustrator, or at least not a good one (I’ve done illustration work in the past, I’m just not terribly brilliant at it).

Right now I don’t have a lot of choices, I have to do my own covers because I don’t have the money to pay to get them done professionally, just like I have limited options for editing. However, in the long run, I would like to change that. I think it’s important to realize your own limitations, and a huge one of mine is that I’m not great at everything. Even if I was a brilliant illustrator or a halfway competent graphic designer, I would not be the best choice for doing my own cover art. Illustration takes time, editing takes time, design takes time, writing takes time. So, given that there is exactly one of me, how should I spend my time?

In my opinion, the answer is writing, my focus should be on writing. It’s the reason I’m doing this, it’s the focus of my work. I can work with someone else’s design, someone else’s photos. Even for my other genre work, I should be commissioning photos, not shooting them myself, and I should be hiring someone to lay out the cover. E-book formatting is easy, so I will probably always do that (I have templates I use), but the covers, that’s a different story.
